The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant awards ceremony draws close, there’s always an outcry for the addition fresh award types to honor unsung work and delight the spirits of followers with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games globally and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
